WASHINGTONLindsey Johnson, President of US Mortgage Insurers (USMI), has issued the following statement on the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) publication of her Annual report to the Congress for the financial year 2021 on the financial situation of the Mortgage Mutual Insurance Fund [hud.gov] (MMIF). This year’s report shows that MMIF’s combined capital ratio stands at 8.03%, compared to 6.10% for fiscal 2020, an increase of 1.93%. The capital ratio of the single-family term mortgage portfolio was 7.99% and the reverse mortgage program was 6.08%:

“We applaud the FHA’s continued efforts and commitment to maintain the fiscal health of MMIF. The FHA is an essential part of the housing finance system and a critical resource for borrowers who may not have access to property in the conventional market. We appreciate the The FHA’s continued focus on helping borrowers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the severe delinquency rate remains high at 8.81%, it continues to improve from a high of 11.9% in November 2020. The mortgage market welcomes this improvement and the USMI is encouraging it. USMI urges the FHA to maintain its current disciplined approach to policies and pricing to ensure that MMIF’s long-term financial health best serves future homebuyers and is prepared to deal with an increase in potential foreclosures. COVID-19 forbearance period ends.

“USMI and our member companies look forward to continuing to work with the FHA, administration and Congress to promote a coordinated and cohesive housing market to meet the needs of low down payment borrowers while protecting taxpayers.
