ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan yesterday urged members of parliament and provincial assemblies to submit annual statements of assets and liabilities by December 31. The election watchdog has asked parliamentarians to submit annual statements of assets and liabilities, including their spouses and dependent children, on Form B for the 2021-2022 financial years, a mandatory requirement under the article 137 of the electoral law of 2017. Under the submission of the declaration of assets and liabilities, “Any member of an Assembly and of a Senate must submit to the Commission, no later than December 31 of each year, a copy of his statement of assets and liabilities, including the assets and liabilities of his spouse and dependent children as indicated above. 13th day of June on Form B”. It says: “The Commission, on the first day of January each year, through a press release, publishes the names of members who have not submitted the required statement of assets and liabilities in the period specified in subsection (1)”. Under the terms of article -137, “The Commission suspends, on January sixteenth, by ordinance, the quality of member of a member of an Assembly and of a Senate who has not submitted the state of the assets and liabilities no later than January 15 and such member shall cease to exercise his functions until he has filed the statement of assets and liabilities”.

It says: “Where a member submits statement of assets and liabilities under this section which is found to be false in material particulars, he may, within 120 days from the date of submission of the state, be prosecuted for committing the offense of corrupt practices”.

Members were informed that the prescribed form as well as the prepared instructions/guidelines therefor can be obtained free of charge from the Election Commission Secretariat, Islamabad, Provincial Election Commissioners Offices in each Province, Senate Secretariat, secretariat of the National Assembly and the secretariats of the provinces.
